Flamewing is an elder gold dragon, residing in the mountains just outside of the city of Starport in Areissa. Many generations ago, before the human kingdoms were established, he was protector of the then much smaller port in return for tribute brought mostly in the form of livestock. Starport gradually felt the need for his protection over the years, and Flamewing mostly then kept to himself in his lair, not bothering himself with the problems of the people below.

During the Pool of Radiance Campaign, the companions found themselves in Starport, and shortly after the city found itself in dire straights as a nasty Corsair Commodore and his fleet set their sights on the city. What first started as a minor attack on the port by a few of his ships, easily turned aside by the assistance of the companions, became an escalated desire for vengeance on the loss of several of his ships.

A fleet was coming, and Jack of Blades was too far away to arrive in time to be of assistance against the foul Corsairs. In desperation to find some way to save the city, it was discovered by looking through old records of the accord had previously with the gold dragon Flamewing. Shessa Hartshorn took it upon herself then to fly to the mountains containing his lair, while the other companions worked with the city to improve its defenses.

Recently the dragons had worked a treaty with the kingdoms to outlaw the unprovoked slaying of dragons, classifying it as murder, and recognizing their rights as individual people just like the other intelligent hominids, and using this as well as negotiating the continuation of tribute once more to set himself up as protector, she was able to secure his assistance. This agreement was then ratified by King Terran himself, and Flamewing continues as a guardian of Starport.
