Site Layout

Site layout or Job layout is a scaled drawing of the proposed construction site showing all the relevant features such as entry and exit points to the site, storage areas of materials, site engineer’s office, areas for keeping equipment, bar bending areas, washing facilities, labour housing, toilets etc. Proper job layout improves communication by avoiding unnecessary movements, thus increasing efficiency.

Factors affecting Job/Site layout

1. Nature of the project: Nature of project will affect the layout. For multi storied building and for highway project layout will be different.

2. Construction methods: For cast in situ method layout will be different and for construction using precast elements, site layout will be different.

3. Availability of resources: For local labors provision for temporary housing, washing and other facilities will not be required, but for outside labors all these things will be necessary.

4. Medical facilities: For very big and complex project, field medical facility is desirable.

5. Site engineer’s office: Should be located in front in noise free areas for better coordination.

6. Provision of temporary roads: internal roads for transport of necessary plant, machinery and materials required for the project. External roads to provide access to site from nearby road/ rail station.

7. Other facilities: Necessary provision of services such as supply of power, telephone connection, repair and maintenance yards should be provided.

Advantages of good Job/Site layout

1. Smooth and economical working of project.

2. Reduces completion time of project.

3. Provides more safety while working.

4. Material wastage and deterioration is reduced.

5. Material transactions become easy, speedy and economical.

6. Increases output from labour and machinery.

Please remember Job/Site layout for same site, same project will be different at different stages of construction.
