SKILLS - tacking, jibing, main trim, slowing your boat, using the rules to slow your opponent, using the physics of sailing to slow your opponent, communicating with your team-mate.
Here is an on board lock at the 2 v 1 drill.
Here's a view of that same drill from the powerboat. This is the downwind section of the course.
Here's a pass back at the offset mark. The boat in first and last are on the same team; the boat in the middle is the opponent. The boat in first slows the opponent so that his team-mate moves from last to first.
And here's the last beat to the finish.
The beauty of this drill is its simplicity. Whichever team has a boat in last is losing the race. If that's your team-mate, then you need to slow one opponent to put the other team in last and bring your teammate up course. If your team can achieve a first and second then focus on balancing your pairs (see Team Race Concepts for more on balance) so that you remain in first and second.
Team with two has an automatic 1. Team with three boats must finish with a 2,3,4 or 2,3,5 to win. Team with two boats wins if they put one opponent in last.
Practice the real thing. Use your knowledge gained from the previous drills to slow an opponent, pass back an opponent, balance opponents, and communicate the plays.
