Habitat: Mostly open country in the plains with trees, wires or other perches
Distribution: Eurasia from Bulgaria, Turkey, east through South Asia to the Philippines
Diet: Large crustaceans, insects, earthworms, rodents, snakes, fish, frogs, small birds; young are fed mostly on invertebrates
Distinguishing features: Bright blue back, wings and tail; chestnut-coloured head, shoulders, flanks and lower belly; white throat and breast; bright red bill and legs
