This is a unique course which very few Universities are offering in detail globally at UG and PG level.
This course builds upon basics of Thermodynamics, Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Dynamics that students have learnt in previous prerequisite courses and aims to give the students a fundamental understanding of how compressors and Turbines work and how they are designed as per specific requirements for aircraft jet engines.
The aerodynamics and fluid flow aspects of compressors and Turbines are covered with considerations of recent advancements in design processes.
Knowledge of aerodynamics of these turbomachines would make the future graduates more employable at govt. organizations like Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Army, DRDO, ISRO, NAL, HAL, GTRE and companies such as GE, P&W, R&R, Siemens, MHI etc. all of which produce turbomachines of various kinds and are in need of graduates trained in the subject. Though, the present course is proposed to induct in the academic curriculum of aerospace engineering. But, it can be floated as an open elective so that the students of other mechanical sciences department also can credit the course. The proposed syllabus covers a wide spectrum of topics from basics to an advanced level.
The course has an optimized lecture schedule covering all the essential topics. On completion of the course, students should:
1. Basic design parameters and their applicability for specific design of turbomachines for aircraft propulsion.
2. Recent trends in design process of turbomachines for aircraft propulsion/gas turbine power plant.
The course has unique feature of PROJECT Based learning where freedom is given to the students to explore their creativity for new strategies for turbomachines design, explore different design strategies with fundamental understanding, Future gas turbine engine compressor and turbine designs with special requirements etc....
