Our club now has a fully automatic Defibrillator (aka an AED) thanks to Barry McGrath getting a grant from Lake Macquarie Council. Its a HeartSine Samaritan SAM 360P model.
It is fully automatic in operation and very simple to use. This short YouTube video shows it in use. Please watch it to see just how easy it is to use.
We have it in a back pack together with the clubs first aid kit.
HOW DO WE USE IT?
The steps below are a summary. (See pages 17-21 of the full instruction manual for more detailed instructions.)
Remove any danger to both you and the patient. Move them if necessary.
Check if the patient is responsive - talk loudly, shake them.
If they ARE responsive then do NOT use the defibrillator.
Check for airway and breathing
Call 000
Retrieve the defibrillator
Start chest compressions whilst the defibrillator is being setup
Start the defibrillator by pushing the green on/off button. Then do as it prompts you.
Some tips:
Someone needs to take charge to do things like:
direct others to ring 000,
fetch the defibrillator and first aid kit,
guide the ambulance,
arrange shade etc.
Arrange a relay. Applying chest compressions will be VERY tiring, VERY quickly, even for the super fit spring chickens in our club!
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
What should I do? Install the Emergency Plus App on your mobile phone. This enables a quick 000 call and gives a precise location.
How will I know how to use it? Make sure to watch the above video. It is fully automatic with clear voice prompts on what to do.
When will we need it? Hopefully never! It is intended that it, and our first aid kit, will be taken on any outings where there are not such items readily available.
Will we have it at our monthly meetings? No. The Wangi Workers Club has First Aid trained staff and a defibrillator.
Where will it be kept? They will reside with the Activities Officer and be taken by whoever is in charge of a particular activity.
What maintenance is required? The only thing we need to do is install a new pad and battery pack every 4 years, or if it gets used. This costs approx $250 so please don't turn it on for fun!
How will we know if its OK? A small green LED near the top of the screen will flash every 5 secs or so.
We've accidentally turned it on - what do we do now? Press the green power button to turn it off again. Avoid turning it on as it will only use up the battery.
