OPTICE

OPTics for ICE and snow

(official site)

A recent research line in collaboration with the University of Bicocca - EUROCOLD (Prof. Valter Maggi).

The aim is to characterize the dust suspended in the ice cores from Antarctica, Greenland, Himalaya, Alps, to better assess the optical properties of the airborne particles in the past.

The key point is the exploitation of very recent optical methods to assess optical properties of particles, in a way that goes beyond the traditional assumptions that are commonly used.

I organized and participated to several campaigns to collect snow in several places and conditions on the Alps.

This activity brought to an extended study of the dust contained in the Old Dome C ice core in Antarctica, revealing for the first time the changes in shape of the dust grains through the innovative SPES method.

The work has been published in Scientific Reports 6, 28162 (2016)
