This is the Official Website of Poseidon Linux in English

Poseidon (GNU/)Linux was designed as a friendly and complete desktop, based on open source software and aimed at the international scientific community (students, technicians, professors, researchers). This operating system is based on Ubuntu (previously in Kurumin/Knoppix) and inspired by Quantian Linux. It offers several specific tools in the areas of GIS, 3D Visualization, Mathematics, Statistics, Genetics, Bio-Informatics and several other fields of research. It also has all the software expected  in a modern desktop such as a complete office suite - with spell checker, web browsers, e-mail readers, instant messaging, to cite but a few. It is ideal for students, teachers, researchers, but also for any common (home) user. Please, see more here.

With Poseidon Linux 3.0 we started a new era for our project, since the new release is based on Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) it can be easily installed in Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, English and German. The previous versions (1.3, 1.5, 2.0), based on Kurumin (a Brazilian Portuguese distro based on Knoppix), were Pt_Br, only.
With Poseidon 3.1 we expanded the included languages to have also Greek, Italian and French. Another improvement is at the boot, because now the users are now able select their own languages right from the beginning when starting the live-DVD.
Also, for Poseidon Linux 3.1 we were pleased to announce -for the very first time- two versions for 32 and 64 bits computers.

Last year our team was proud to announce the Poseidon Linux 3.2, born May/2010, and officially presented at the IV Brazilian Oceanography Congress!
Due to software technical details (i.e. some special packages included), only the 32 bits version was launched then, based on Ubuntu 9.10. However it run in any kind of PC (with "older" single-core processors, up to Dual, Quad, Intel_32 and AMD_64 processors).

Version 4.0 was launched in 2010. Both 32 bits and 64 bits versions were released. This release is based on the Long Term Support (LTS) Ubuntu 10.04 (with 3 years of updates guaranteed by Canonical), since our goals are stability, usability and support for the whole system when used professionally at universities, institute, colleges and -also- at home.

The next version, Poseidon Linux 5.0 (in RC version, for now), will be the dawn of a new era for us. It will be based on Ubuntu LTS 12.04.1 and will have unity, as the default desktop environment. And based on the usage statistics and the users requests, we'll keep in the official ISO only the packages in use by our regular users. This version will be oriented to MBSystem, geostatistics and GIS, image management, office and multimedia, basically. The other packages (bio-informatics, etc.) can be installed by the users easily, later.

Poseidon Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution. It was designed for the academic and scientific community, following the need for a friendly, complete and stable desktop based on open source, 100% free software. Our aim is not to deliver one new distro after another, but to deliver a solid, usable and trustful disto for professional and home computers, that will be updated when the special packages and the base system requires so.

It includes a large number of scientific applications, covering areas such as:

  • GIS and Geostatistics
  • Visualization 2D/3D/4D
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • CAD / Engineering
  • Computer Graphics
  • Image Editing and Vectorial Drawing
  • Numeric modelling / Simulation
  • Scientific graphs
  • Scientific Authoring
  • Database
  • Programming languages
  • Audio/Video
Poseidon Linux also offers all software needed to make it a complete workstation - office suite, web browser, e-mail readers, instant messaging, among others.

Firstly, thanks to our team (Bernardo, Denis, Eduardo, Gonzalo), which with their sweat and voluntary work turned these project in reality. Thanks also to: Prof. Gilberto Griep (Lab. of Geological Oceanography, FURG, Brazil) for the incentive and for believing in our project from the beginning; our friend Armin Feiden for the suggestions and the biggest user of Poseidon Linux; to the innumerate researchers and users of Poseidon Linux spread across Brazil and the world, especially to those who contributed to the selection of tools of the latest version. Last but not least, thanks to the G3PD (UFPEL, Brazil), Marum and Chromgruen (Germany), Linuxfreedom, and other sites for hosting our ISO for download.

For the release of Poseidon Linux 3.1 and 3.2 we would like to thank our users around the globe for the comments and suggestions to improve it. For the translation of our start page we would like to thank Jean Philippe "Dr. Baby-Foot" Savy (French), Marcello Tola (Italian), Kapetanakis Giannis (Greek).
