II. Teaching the lesson
Activity 1: Ordering Pictures (20 minutes)
Write the word volleyball on the board
Ask students if they have ever played volleyball before
If a student has, have them explain the game to the class briefly
Write any words the student uses that are used in sports, ex: net, ball, etc.
Add the following words on the board, asking students to explain if they can; team, powerful, overhand, serve, defend, block, attack, spike, setter. (at this point it may be necessary to direct students’ attention to Word Work on pg.72 to explain the suffix -er)
Have students turn to page 72 and look at A
After a few moments, ask students to explain the words on the board
Let students know they will now listen to the track and they should put the pictures in order.
Play the track again as needed
In pairs, have students review their answers
Activity 2: Complete the Sentences (10 minutes)
Explain to students that they can use clue words in a sentence to know what POF and tense to use.
Read sentence 1 in B and ask students if they think a verb or noun would be in the space.
Ask students what tense it should be in and how they figured that out (attacks)
Continue with the rest of the blanks.
Have students work in pairs to fill in the blanks
Monitor students to make sure they have the answers and discuss any questions
Activity 3: Volleyball Video (20 minutes)
Tell students they are going to pretend to be on the phone with their friend who really wants to but cannot watch the UH vs USC beach volleyball game.
Pretend to be on the phone and explain 0:00-0:19 of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYTHnni35oM (“University of Hawaii UH vs USC sand beach volleyball finals”) as an example
Have them sit back to back with a partner
The student with their face towards the front will be the first to explain
Play the video from 0:00-0:19
Stop and replay the section
Allow time for students to explain what is going on in the video. (served, hit, set, spike, defend)
Play the next section, 0:21-0:40
Stop and replay the section as needed
Have students switch places and play 0:10-0:40 so students can compare what they thought the person said with the video
Play section 0:41-0:50
Replay as needed
Play last section 0:50-1:00
Play 0:41-1:00
If students are involved in the activity, have them switch places again and pause the video after a point is scored.
