ABSTRACT: As a student in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program, I learned about many instructional approaches and the roles of teachers and students in each. Overtime, it became apparent to me that the categorization of the teacher’s role is that a teacher should be a “facilitator “of student learning rather than a dispenser of knowledge. I understood that being an effective facilitator of language learning was much more than assisting students as they going through textbook each tasks or activities. However, until I began teaching, I did not realize how much work was involved in planning lessons that truly facilitate student learning. While it is not easy to plan and manage such lessons, doing so results in positive outcomes for student motivation, classroom dynamics, and ultimately language learning. This poster explores the notion of teacher as facilitator with background information, examples, and reflections from my TESOL coursework, classroom observations, professional development, and most importantly, student teaching experience in AL 4960.
