Ты старым был, но не от ветхих лет
утратил жизнь, а от визжащей пули,
как многие в том гибельном июле.
И до сих пор меня терзает, дед,
не смерть, а то последнее мгновенье,
когда чужое рвение сочло
излишней роскошью твоё тепло
на белом свете, — предисчезновенье,
которое уводит от людей полней,
чем смерть.(Кто знает, что творится
в душе растерянного очевидца
расчётливо обдуманных страстей?)
Не может этот ужас не остаться —
прозренье гибнущего бытия,
в котором ты и жертва — и судья
нечеловеческого святотатства.
Наверно, даже дети в этот миг
молниеносно старились в надежде
уйти естественною смертью, прежде
чем рёв свинцовый оборвёт их крик.
Чем остаётся этот сгусток боли,
обида мыслящего существа?
Какой туман, ручей или трава —
приют последних мыслей в чистом поле?
Чем одолеть виденье это, дед?
Куда я спрячу этот ужас вечный —
то, как ты ждёшь отправки на конечный
тот свет, где не известно, есть ли свет?

You weren’t young, however you were killed
Not by old age, but by a bullet whizzing by,
Like many others in that deadly, hot July
And, grandpa, even now I’m troubled still
Not by your death, but by that final moment,
When someone else decided fervently
Your warmth was too extravagant to be
Felt in this world, - that transient premortem,
Which takes one from the living even farther
Than death itself. (And who can say at all
What sort of things transpire in the soul
That gets to witness the intended horror?)
One can’t outlast that awful sensation –
Death’s recognition, where you are as much
The victim doomed as the presiding judge
To the inhuman sacrilegious desecration.
It’s likely, even children, at that moment,
As quick as lightning, tried to die instead
A natural death before the shrieking lead
Cut short their cries of terrifying torment.
Such insult of a man will leave a trace, -
But what remains of the affliction’s mass?
What haze, which streams, which fields of grass –
Become at last its final resting place?
O, grandpa, tell me how can I persist,
How can I bare and overcome the fright –
The vision of you sent into the light,
Into a place where light might not exist?
