ПРОГУЛКА В ГОРАХ
Что я хотел сказать? Помнил – и вот те на!
Может, как жизнь длинна,
А может, как время круто?
Нет, это все – не то,
Это – игра в лото,
Там был настоящий смысл, скрывшийся почему-то.
Что я хотел сказать? Что по ночам не сплю?
Что не радость коплю,
А страх перед злом двуглавым?
Что знанье мое - из тех,
Которые не для всех,
Что, чувствуя правоту, я не хочу быть правым?
Что я хотел сказать, а может быть даже спеть:
Уж если кровавая смерть,
То – в окопе, а не в бараке.
Но пафос смещает суть,
Как муха, влетая в суп.
Я морщился сам не раз, читая такие враки.
Что я хотел сказать? Что если без болтовни,
Знаем лишь мы одни
Собственным страхам цену.
Честь говорит: "Рискни",
Разум: "Сиди в тени:
Глупо ведь, извини, биться башкой о стену".
Что я хотел сказать – не суть, все равно не смог.
Устал я, и видит Бог –
Еще далеко до дома.
Устал от скользких камней,
А сам от себя – сильней.
Спуск с горы не трудней, он просто страшней подъёма.
A walk in the mountains
What did I wish to say? It was just here – and gone!
Maybe, that life drags on,
Or maybe, how time runs steep?
All of this now rings hollow,
This is – a game of lotto,
There was real sense in it, - now hidden and buried deep.
What did I wish to say? That I don't sleep at night?
That I keep joy in sight,
But fear the evil no less?
My knowledge is of the kind
That few men can get behind, -
I wish not to be in the right, feeling my rightfulness.
What I did wish to say, or maybe even to sing:
If death be bloody, - then in
The trenches, not prison camp barracks.
But the aim of pathos is off,
Like a fly that lands in the broth.
I too grimaced, reading such bollocks.
What did I wish to say? Without any need to ask,
What if no one but us
Knows the price of our fears at all.
Honor says: “Take a chance,”
Common sense: “Don’t be dense:
It’s foolish to beat one’s head into the concrete wall.”
Whatever I wished to say – is irrelevant, I could not.
I’m tired now, and by God,
The road back home seems unending.
I’m sick of the rocks below,
And of myself – more so.
Descending is not any harder, just scarier than ascending.
