как думают насмешники, а всюду.
Он освящает кровлю и посуду
и честно двери делит пополам.
В деревне Он - в избытке. В чугуне
Он варит по субботам чечевицу,
приплясывает сонно на огне,
подмигивает мне, как очевидцу.
Он изгороди ставит. Выдает
девицу за лесничего. И в шутку
устраивает вечный недолет
объездчику, стреляющему в утку.
Возможность же все это наблюдать,
к осеннему прислушиваясь свисту,
единственная, в общем, благодать,
доступная в деревне атеисту.

In villages, God isn’t found only
in corners as the skeptics like to claim.
He blesses roofs and dishes all the same,
and splits the double doors there uniformly.
In villages, He is abundant. He cooks lentil
in iron pots on Saturdays enthralled,
He dances in the fire, all entangled,
and winks at me, a witness to it all.
He puts up fences. Marries off the lass
onto the forester. And, as a prank, He steers
the warden's every shot just past
the startled duck, which quickly disappears.
The opportunity to witness all of this,
and hark the call of autumn winding down,
is, after all, the only sense of bliss
that’s granted to the atheist in town.
