"I embraced these shoulders..."
I embraced these shoulders and gazed over
at what appeared beyond the back, enthralled,
and saw there that the chair, pulled forward,
had blended seamlessly with the illumined wall.
The incandescence of the lamp fell on
worn furniture with an unkind glint,
and so, the sofa in the corner shone
with brown leather, with a yellow tint.
The table languished and the parquet gleamed.
The stove grew dark. A dusty frame. Inside it,
the landscape froze. Alone, the sideboard seemed,
of all the things, to me, to be enlivened.
A little moth was whirling in a daze,
and set my gaze again in motion. If a phantom
had once, in fact, resided in this place,
he’s certainly abandoned it. Abandoned.
