Old jacket

To Z. Bolotova
I’ve worn my jacket years on end,
it’s shabby now, its colors paler.
And so I’ve called myself a tailor
to have it altered once again.
I tell him quietly, in jest:
“I’d like a total alteration.
The skill you show in your creation
may shift my fortunes for the best.”
I was just joking, but he took
my words for truth, and worked unhurried,
meticulous, but clearly worried:
afraid to err somehow. That kook.
And this concern is unforgiving,
in his hard work, without rest,
that I look fortunate and blessed
each time I wear it. While I’m living.
And he envisions: just one look
while wearing it will be enough
for me to conjure up your love...
As if it's possible. That kook.
