Все мне чаще снится, все нежнее
Мне о ней бывают сны!"
И пришел в наш град угрюмый
В предвечерний тихий час,
О Венеции подумал
И о Лондоне зараз.
Стал у церкви темной и высокой
На гранит блестящих ступеней
И молил о наступленьи срока
Встречи с первой радостью своей.
А над смуглым золотом престола
Разгорался Божий сад лучей:
"Здесь она, здесь свет веселый
Серых звезд - ее очей".

Through villages and fields, he’d go,
Determined, asking passersby:
“Where has she gone, where is the glow
Of silver stars that are her eyes?
The final days of spring are here,
They burn with dull and waning embers,
And in my dreams, her face appears
More often every night, more tender!”
Thus he approached our dismal town,
Before the evening hour fell,
He thought of Venice, looking down,
And London came to him as well.
Beside the tall and darkened church,
On granite steps that sparkled bright,
He prayed then for the day’s approach
When he would meet his first delight.
Above the altar’s tarnished gold,
God’s rays were spreading in the skies:
“She’s here now, here you’ll find the glow
Of silver stars that are her eyes.”
