Many years ago, I got frustrated by the sheer number of script analysis / basic outlining techniques out there and decided to see how a handful of the best-known ones (at that time) compared. I found that, by and large, they seem to identify the same story beats: turning points and the periods between them. However, it's also quite helpful to see how each technique describes them, as - depending on your script - one description is often more relevant than the others. Anyway, below is the resulting hybrid script analysis document :-)
The titles of the turning points are bold underlined, while the periods between them are titled in bold. Each analysis technique contains far more detail than is shown here, so this is not meant as a replacement, but rather as a way to find the commonality between them.
Paul Chitlik’s terminology is in blue, Michael Hauge’s in green, Blake Snyder’s in red, Vogler/Campbell’s in pink and Paul Gulino’s in orange.
