Bermuda lighthouses

This is just a gonzo photo essay about two of the Bermuda lighthouses I visited.

I have had a fascination for Lighthouses for years, actually applying for a job with the New Zealand Ministry of Transport as a 'relief lighthouse keeper' back in 1980 after I finished my B.Sc (Zoology). I even got an interview, but unfortunately didn't get the job and a year later, the position and indeed the career of being a New Zealand light house keeper was phased out in favour of completely automated lighthouse stations.

But I guess that is progress?

One day, a scientist collegue of mine at the then Ecology Division DSIR had visited Stephens Island, at the top of D'Urville Island in the Marlborough Sounds 'Out of the Blue' asked me if I had ever visited Stephens Island? and I replied "Why yes I have, I spent a memorable 2 weeks there doing invertebrate surveys there for my MSc thesis .... how did you know?"

He replied: "You CARVED your name on the lighthouse there"

Oooops, I honestly don't recall doing that ..... and DON'T try doing that at home kids!!

Bermuda has two Lighhouses 'of consequence' and they are doozies. They are mostly open to the public, have a zillion steps to climb up to sensational views [if you are happy with heights] and are of some antiquity. Here are a few photos but no information.

[No Bermuda lighthouse were damaged as a consequence of this photo essay]
