Course Description
Each week until the midterm, there are different topics covered theoretically and empirically. For the midterm exam, there will be an assignment which constitute 40% of the overall grade. After the midterm, class hours become office hours to consult on the empirical papers to be submitted due final exam day. Empirical papers constitute 60% of the overall grade. Papers should be at least 5-pages long (12 times roman and single line spacing). You can work as a group of 2 at most.
Empirical papers should be done using package programs, such as Eviews, STATA, R or Python, employing a regression model based on a topic you choose and using databases, such as World Bank, for any country or country group for any time period. You can paste some figures (bar charts, pie charts, etc.) to explain the data/model of your analysis. All the books, articles, websites you use while preparing your work should be cited. Otherwise, you commit plagiarism -please be aware that this is a crime.
Papers not matching above criteria will be graded poorly.
Those who failed with 0, must write a new paper following the writing guide; those who failed with above 0, must revise their paper according to the writing guide.

MIDTERM
HOMEWORKCLICK HERE FOR THE COUNTRY INFORMATION
Deadline: Midterm Exam Day (16.11.2026 - 22.11.2026)
You will be uploading your homework to the Drive folder as a PDF document WITH YOUR NAME AND LAST NAME GIVEN TO THE FILE (example: pinardeniz.pdf)Each student is assigned a certain country for their empirical analysis. You can use any package program for the empirical work. For the country you are assigned, you will be downloading Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions excluding LULUCF per capita (t CO2e/capita) and GDP per capita constant US$ from WorldBank database for the period 1970-2024.
You will also upload the dataset, replication files and all steps to your GitHub page. To do this, you need to create a GitHub account if you already do not have one. To create one, click here.
1- You will be taking logarithm of both variables and using logarithmic version of the dataset for the rest of the analysis.2- You will be showing scatter plot of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for your assigned country and you will be adding a regression line3- You will be running an OLS regression for a nonlinear model that includes the square of GDP per capita.4- You will be taking the screenshot of "the scatter plot" and "the regression result". Hence, two screenshots will be pasted into your document.5- You will be interpreting whether EKC is holding for your assigned country.*Even though midterm exam is in homework format, you still need to show up during the exam day and fill out an exam sheet (your interpretation on your empirical analysis on EKC - open book) and sign the attendance list for bureaucratic reasons.
