Mikhail Glinka Works

Widely regarded as the father of Russian classical music, Mikhail Glinka (1804 - 1857) wrote two operas and many orchestral pieces as well as art songs, piano pieces, and chamber music. He successfully combined Russian tunes with western operatic form. Glinka’s orchestral music is both traditional and innovative, and always exciting. His compositions were an important influence on the later Russian composers who continued his work by developing a distinctive Russian style of music. Three Russian conservatories are named after Mikhail Glinka, and an asteroid is named "2205 Glinka" in his honor.
