Mikhail Glinka The Lark

Featuring a beautiful and sad melody, The Lark (Жаворонок) is the tenth piece from Mikhail Glinka's collection of twelve songs called Farewell to St. Petersburg. The Russian pianist, conductor, and composer Mily Balakirev (1837 - 1910) wrote a version for piano solo.

Mikhail Glinka (1804 - 1857) was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country, and is often regarded as the father of Russian classical music. Glinka's compositions were an important influence on future Russian composers, who, following Glinka's lead, produced a distinctive Russian style of music. Among his most notable works are the operas Ivan Soussanine (or A Life for the Tsar) and Ruslan and Ludmila, the symphonic poem Kamarinskaya, and the orchestral pieces A Night in Madrid and Jota Aragonesa. Glinka also composed many songs, many piano pieces, and some chamber music.
