There are two versions of this lab. The students in Fall 2020 will use the procedure described in this link Thorlabs_MI_experiment.
There are no specific videos for the Thorlabs setup.
In the lab you will complete 3 experiments.
Measure the wavelength of light for the green diode laser.
Refractive Index Determination.
Measure the thermal Expansion Coefficient of an aluminum rod.
In an alternate version of the lab we measure the wavelength of light from a Helium Neon laser, the index of refraction of air, and the thermal coefficient of expansion of copper.
There are a number of steps for this. All walkthrough videos are below.
1. Use the old school interferometer to get the wavelength of a HeNe laser.
Michelson Interferometer_basic_Kalafut.pdf
2. Use the old school interferometer to get the index of refraction of air.

3. Use modern interferometry device to get the wavelength of a HeNe laser.
4. Use modern interferometry device to get the index of refraction of air.
Note, this apparatus is a huge advance. Watch the videos. You will have to learn to read the vernier scale, there is a video for that.
5. If you have the time and courage, get the thermal coefficient of expansion of copper.
Take note of the troubleshooting video also.
