處女將北見於王，道逢一翁，自稱曰袁公。問於處女：「吾聞子善劍，願一見之。」女曰：「妾不敢有所隱，惟公試之。」於是袁公即拔箖箊竹，竹枝上枯槁，未折墮地，女即捷末。袁公操其本而刺處女。處女應即入之，三入，因舉杖擊袁公。袁公則飛上樹，變為白猿。遂別去。
The maiden was invited to see the king in the north. (On the way) Meeting an elderly man on the road by chance, calling himself Duke Yuan, he asked the maiden: "I've heard that my child is good with a sword (jian) and I would like to see it." The lady said: "Your servant dare not conceal (her skill), but the Duke must test it." Thereupon Duke Yuan pulled up some bamboo with leaves and the bamboo branches were withered and he broke it with them falling to the ground. The lady at once picked up the end of the bamboo. Duke Yuan thrust the stalk at the maiden. The maiden responded immediately blocking it and entered three times striking Duke Yuan with the staff and lifting him up. Duke Yuan flew up to the top of a tree and became a white ape. Satisfied they departed.
見越王，越王問曰：「夫劍之道則如之何？」女曰：「妾生深林之中，長於無人之野，無道不習，不達諸侯。竊好擊之道，誦之不休。妾非受於人也，而忽自有之。」越王曰：「其道如何？」女曰：「其道甚微而易，其意甚幽而深。道有門戶，亦有陰陽。開門閉戶，陰衰陽興。
Seeing King Yue, King Yue asked, "What is the Way of your sword?" The lady said: "Your servant grew up deep inside the forest, in the uninhabited wild, with no way to study and no way to communicate with the princes. My Way is that I am fond of striking and reciting endlessly. Your servant did not receive from others, but suddenly has her own." King Yue said: "What is your Way?" The lady said: "My Way is very small and easy, the meaning is hidden and very deep. The Way has a door and there are yin and yang. Open and close the door; yin descends and yang ascends.
凡手戰之道，內實精神，外示安儀，見之似好婦，奪之似懼虎，布形候氣，與神俱往，杳之若日，偏如滕兔，追形逐影，光若彿彷，呼吸往來，不及法禁，縱橫逆順，直復不聞。斯道者，一人當百，百人當萬。王欲試之，其驗即見。」越王大悅，即加女號，號曰「越女。」乃命五校之隊長、高才習之，以教軍士。當此之時皆稱越女之劍。
The Way of hand-to-hand fighting is internally vigorous and outwardly calm, appearing as a proper lady, seize it like the fear of a tiger. Form follows qi together with spirit advancing, disappearing like the sun, dodging like a rabbit, chasing form and shadow and the impressions of light. Breathing before and after is not as good as the method of enduring and the vertical and horizontal and ni (reversed) and shun (follow), to straighten and return are not well known. This Way is one person is a hundred and a hundred people are ten thousand. If the king wants to try it he will see at once." King Yue was pleased and gave the lady a nickname, "lady of Yue (Yuenu)." The captain of the fifth military, Gao Caixi, was appointed to teach the soldiers. At this time it is called the sword of the lady of Yue (Yuenu).
