Some interesting facts;
The Match Play championship was introduced following the 1961 Annual General Meeting with first prize being £4 and runner-up £2.
The Club Championship was introduced in 1964 and was originally known as the Recreation Club Trophy. The Recreation Club donated a new putter to the winner.
In 1976 the Recreation Club trophy was renamed the Club Championship.
Until 2016 when Rick Bartley repeated the feat, we believe only one member, Kevin Sutton, has ever won both the Club Championship and the Match Play Championship in the same year (1969). ps Bruce Terry has also now completed the double in 2019 and in 2020 Dave Sneddon won the Match Play and was declared a joint winner of the Stroke Play Championships.
Talk about stamina! The 1976 match play knockout involved a bizarre feat of endurance by Chris Erskine and Warren Fletcher who took their 2nd round match to the 37th hole before Chris triumphed. Chris then backed up in the quarter final for another 20 holes against Lionel Mitchell and despite all that practice against Fletch, Chris lost to Lionel in the ‘quarters’.
