The small Granite Headstone situated alongside No’s 1,2,3 above has now been read, thanks to Janet Halligan. As it is part of that same burial plot it has proved to be most interesting.

It reads as follows ;

         HERE LYETH THE BODY OF DARBY MULLOY                        (5)

         WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON APRIL 10th  1761

         HIS WIFE ANNE WHO DIED ON JUNE 17th 1795 AGED 66 YEARS

         ERECTED BY JAMES MULLOY.

With the coming to hand of additional information it is now possible to determine the relationships between the family members buried here in Kilbride cemetery, to each other and to other family members buried elsewhere. It is a point of great significance that all these people have been returned here to Kilbride for burial from four different areas, spread across the northern part of the County of Kildare;  Wolfstown ;  Rathmore ; Kilteel ;  Newtown Great.

There may be various reasons for this happening but there is none more compelling than the fact that all of them had their origins in The Corn Mill at Kilbride, from whatever generation they came from. Coupled with the fact that the cemetery in Kilbride is situated in a corner of the land that was once the Mullee family holding, including the Corn Mill.

Grave number 3 as shown above, is the ancestral grave of the Molloy family, many of whom live in the Kilbride area. The John Molloy to whom this headstone was erected by his wife Sarah (Murray) was the man who left the Corn Mill with his brother Michael in the 1830’s. In 1874 his daughter Margaret was the first one buried in what was to become a family burial plot alongside the grave of his grandparents, Darby and Anne. He was interred here himself in the year 1892 as was his son Michael. His wife Sarah was interred in 1913 and their daughter in law, Maria in 1923. His son Darby, husband of Maria ( Slattery ) is buried in Naas Co. Kildare.

The John Molloy referred to in the story as the man who returned to Kilbride, was the  eldest son of Darby and Maria and was John’s grandson. He is buried alongside his wife Mary in the new cemetery in Kilbride, which is situated beside the old cemetery. He was born in 1902 and died in 1977.

The other two headstones which are erected alongside John’s, in the old cemetery on what appears to be the same grave, are his nephews Darby Molloy son of Patrick from the Corn Mill and who lived in Kilteel and Michael Mullee son of Michael from Wolfstown.

The above John Molloy, buried in grave no 3 was a first cousin of Peter Mullee whose headstone stands over grave no. 4, by virtue of the fact that their fathers Darby and Patrick were brothers, both of whom were born around 1760.

It has been disappointing in the number of people in the various generations whose place of burial we have been unable to establish. This has been due to the lack of headstones, which give such valuable information. There are the brothers just mentioned above. Darby and his wife spent all their lives in Kilbride, at the other end of the farm, from the cemetery and must surely be buried there. His brother Patrick and his wife, who like their son Peter, would very likely have been brought back from Newtown Great to Kilbride to be buried.

Darby’s son Patrick and his wife Jane who like his father worked the Corn Mill for many years. Jane spent her final years with her daughter Eliza Quinn in Ballinahown but it must be assumed that they are buried in Kilbride. Likewise we have no idea where Michael Mullee, brother of Patrick and John, and his wife Mary are buried.

Efforts are being made to have the headstone to Darby Mulloy and his wife Anne, who are the ancestors of all the ancestors, restored to its correct position and it will then be seen that the other three headstones were erected in such a way as to demonstrate, that this was truly the one family grave.
