Correspondence and papers, 1742-1844, of attorney Peter E. Elmendorf of Albany and various other members of the Elmendorf family. Papers include a considerable quantity of Elmendorf family correspondence, including lengthy letters addressed by Peter E. Elmendorf to his, [mother] Mary Elmendorf, of Esopus, New York; as well as letters to and from his sister, Blandina (Elmendorf) Bruyn, of Esopus; his brother John Elmendorf, of Raritan, New Jersey; his sister Eliza Elmendorf; daughter Maria (Elmendorf) Sanders; son Peter Elmendorf, Jr.; nephew Edmund B. Elmendorf; Lucas Elmendorf; and various other members of the Elmendorf, Bruyn, and Sanders families. Letters pertain to family and personal matters, domestic life, health, news of friends and neighbors, finances, real estate transactions, business interests, Peter E. Elmendorf's legal practice, and current events, including a lengthy and detailed account of the great fire in Albany, December 17, 1793, by Peter E. Elmendorf; letters referring to the hanging of three slaves in Albany for arson in 1794; and a letter by Peter E. Elmendorf, Jr., describing the 1835 fire in New York City. Financial and legal papers include ca. 110 estate papers, indentures, bonds, deeds, inventories, accounts, bills, receipts, promissory notes, invoices, etc., for a wide range of goods and services, as well as bills for legal and court fees. Additional items include a memo book kept by Peter E. Elmendorf, 1786-1788; a lengthy list of persons invited to attend the 1798 funeral of Peter's wife, Elizabeth; small and primitively rendered pencil portrait in memory of Peter E. Elmendorf's sister, Sarah (1759-1772), accompanied by a brief memorial poem; and a journal kept by Peter during a 1786 trip taken to Nine Partners in Ulster County in order to collect rents and conduct business concerning property owned by the Elmendorf family.

Ulster County Clerk's office recording note, Jan. 17, 1842, before title. Two-page, folio, Indenture between John V.R. Elmendorf, Peter Edmund Elmendorf and his wife Harriet Maria of Albany and the Verplancks noted. Dated Dec. 1, 1841, the deed is for a certain tract of land in the County of Ulster, subdivision lot two of the "Second Allotment of the Mary Elmendorf tract in Great lot No. Six of the Hardenburgh Patent." Signed by the Elmendorfs at end.
