Obituary
Mrs. Harriet Maria Van Rensselaer Elmendorf, widow of Dr. Peter Edmond Elmendorf, died on Wednesday at the residence of her son-in-law, Dr. J. W. Gould, at 29 South Clinton Street, East Orange (NJ.) She was born in 1815 (sic) at Albany, and was the daughter of Gen. Solomon Van Rensselaer of Revolutionary fame. New York Times, Friday, December 24, 1897.
Addendum:
Dr. Peter Edmund Elmendorf and his wife Harriet Maria Van Rensselaer had a daughter, Harriet. Young Harriet grow-up in the Cherry Hill family home and was called Hattie. Her Aunt Catharina told her about events in their family history. Here is one such story:
“In October, 1777, Sir Henry Clinton with the British fleet proceeded up the Hudson to Kingston intending to cut his way through and join Burgoyne at Saratoga, which fortunately was frustrated by Burgoyne's surrender. While at Kingston or Esopus he demolished the place and burnt almost every house; among which was a fine family residence, dear Hattie, of your paternal grandfather, Peter E. Elmendorf, then a lad of 12 years.”
