"The purpose of the Peterborough Energy Committee is to build capacity to lower Peterborough’s carbon footprint and prepare the town to be resilient in a future marked by climate change. We believe it is imperative that Peterborough, as a community, face the challenges associated with energy use and climate change by planning for a more sustainable future. We also believe there are economic opportunities for towns that take such a proactive approach. Finally, we see the Energy Committee as an effective vehicle to act on the commitments the town made in its Climate Resolution at the 2007 Town Meeting, in the 2017 Climate Resolution signed by the Select Board, and in the warrant article passed in 2021 that set a goal for the entire Town to transition to 100% renewable sources of electricity by 2030 and for all other energy needs by 2050. "
Conflict of Interest Policy
The Peterborough Energy Committee (PEC) is an ad hoc committee approved by the Select Board of the town of Peterborough in December 2017. We have no formal bylaws at this time, but feel a conflict of interest policy is prudent to guide and protect our members as we work toward the goals of our Mission Statement.
We recognize that PEC members may have potential business or personal interests in energy projects in Peterborough and in the region. We cannot operate effectively as a committee without the expertise of energy and other professionals. We control no funds of our own; therefore welcome full participation by our members in energy projects that work toward our mission, including good faith and transparent financial support and technical expertise.
Peterborough Energy Committee members are obligated to uphold high ethical standards. They must avoid undisclosed conflicts of interest when carrying out their duties. Stated plainly, all personal or professional interest in a project shall be disclosed to the full committee promptly.
If any committee member becomes involved in a situation that is, or could appear to be, a conflict of interest, that member must disclose it to the committee in a timely fashion, before or at the beginning of the next scheduled committee meeting. If the committee determines that a member’s interest in a project could be detrimental to the work of the committee, then the other members of the committee may ask the person to leave during discussions of the pertinent situation. The remaining members will then decide how to handle the situation in an ethical way.
When the PEC works on a project with another entity, such as a town or school, it will inform the other entity of potential conflicts, offer assistance to mitigate potential conflicts of interest, and at all times encourage transparency in all dealings with all parties.
