Peteranec / Nošnja

Peteranec

PETERANEC

Peteranec is situated 5 km north from Koprivnica. Today it has approximately 1500 inhabitants. It is the birthplace of Fran Galović, who was born there at the end of the 19th century. Fran Galović was a kajkavian dialect poet and our school and club proudly carrie his name. Peteranec is also well known for the Ivan Sabolić Gallery which is in the 18th century Captaincy building.

Although Peteranec is not far from the urban area, many ethnographic objects characteristic of peasants' lifestyle have been preserved. Part of the ethnographic collection is exhibited in a private home (a typical Podravina house). The most interesting exhibits are: furniture, bedding embroidered in white thread typical of Peteranec (file, „šlinganje“, toledo embroidery), kitchen utensils and a traditional corn storage „koš“.Traditional woman's costume from Peteranec is richly embroidered, similar to traditional costumes of other villages in Podravina. The embroidery is found on hidden parts of the costume (petticoats, undergarments). The skirt is pleated („faldana“), most often red or black, covered with silk apron („frtunj“). Headgear includes a braid rolled into „kobas“ and usually covered with a silk scarf „svilenec“ or a cap called „šamija“, depending on the woman's age and marital status.

The man's costume is simpler: (štofene lače) and a shirt (robača) made of linen cloth. Girls wore petticoats and different colour aprons and their hair was braided, while boys wore white linen cloth trousers called „gače“ and a white shirt (robača). All the white parts of the costume had to be stiffened with starch.
