“Fran Galović” Cultural Club Peteranec

History

“Fran Galović” Cultural Club Peteranec was founded in 1999 as a section of the Women’s Club Peteranec. Members of the Cultural Club have reconstructed folk costumes of the period between 1918 – 1920, both for men and women. The Club has participated in various folklore festivals in Croatia and has also organized two folklore festivals in the village of Peteranec: “Valentinovo u Peterancu” (St Valentine’s Day in Peteranec) and “Peteranski šlingeraj” (the festival of the traditional white-on-white hand embroidery). As a joint project with the Koprivnica Town Museum, the Club has participated in and organized several thematic ethnographic exhibitions. Every year the Club co-organizes the folklore and literature festival “Galovićeva jesen”, when they host numerous culture clubs from the Koprivnica Križevci County and the rest of Croatia. Members of the “Fran Galović” Cultural Club, some fifty in number, work to preserve the traditional cultural values of the village of Peteranec and to save the local customs and dialect from extinction. Special sections of the Club are the Children’s Folklore Group, Drama Group and Recital Group.

The Children’s Folklore Group takes part in the annual Children’s Folklore Festival of the Koprivnica Križevci County. In 2004 they prepared a multimedia catalogue for the exhibition of children games and toys “Dječje igre i i gračke”, organized by the Koprivnica Town Museum. Their presentation of the customs and traditions of “Zvezdari” (traditional Epiphany house blessings) was recorded and broadcast by the Croatian National Television.

The folklore group cherishes customs and traditions and performs traditional songs and dances of the village of Peteranec, (Peteranski svati – traditional wedding, Vuzem – Easter traditions, matkanje – the custom of girls exchanging Easter eggs, Proščenje za Petrovo – St Peter’s Day Fair, Christmas traditions, zvezdari - traditional Epiphany blessing of the home, Peteranska hiža – the village of Peteranec traditional household, močenje putra – butter churning, pralje – washerwomen, kočija – horse-drawn carriage, snehina postel – wife’s bedding etc.)

Members of the Cultural Club Choir have participated in the programme of the Koprivnica FM Radio.

The Club organizes the School of White-on-White Hand Embroidery.

In 2005, on the occasion of the County Day the Club received the cultural contribution award presented to the Club President, Mrs Katica Erdec by the President of the Republic of Croatia, Mr Stipe Mesić.

In 2006 a monograph of the Women’s Club Peteranec and the “Fran Galović” Cultural Club Peteranec was published. In 2014. the Club published a book on the cultural heritage of the village of Peteranec.

The folklore group has participated in "Đakovački vezovi" and "Vinkovačke jeseni" - state festivals of the original Croatian folklore, as well as in The State Festival of Children's Folklore in Kutina. They have also taken part in international folklore festivals Pražske Folklorni Dny in Prague, Makedonsko sonce in Ohrid, Citta eterna in Rome, IV. Summer Arts Festival in Krakowe, DravaGastroLoby in Barcs and Andere lander - andere speisen in Salzburg.
