Sweet Gentle Rain

Description:

This short, ethereal-sounding chant is arranged here for SATB. It starts with a brief introduction, then the four vocal parts sing the main melody and counter-melody in pairs, to form a doubled round. The melodies are different lengths, so as the round progresses, the related patterns shift and merge to create a strangely hypnotic, echoey effect. The whole song lasts for about two minutes.

The short, repeated phrases make it easy to learn and quick to teach, so it is ideal for warming-up, practice, or performance. The occasional use of a rain-stick and descending plinks of a sansula or kalimba can enhance the atmosphere of this enchanting song.

Description:

2 vocal parts with additional 'Call', piano accompaniment, guitar chords, drum / xylophone. Useful in Schools / Community, for choirs and activity groups. Suitable for assemblies / performances / special occasions, or in the home - just for fun! A lively song to celebrate life and encourage Ujima: ‘working together for common good’. The easy chorus encourages audience participation.

This song was originally inspired by an old Tarzan film I saw as a child! Tarzan explained what ‘Ujima’ meant to Jane and the word / ethos, has stuck with me ever since. Nearly forty years later… I was asked to write a song for a ‘whole-school celebration, to involve the audience and inspire co-operation’. So I used the idea for this song.

Original recordings of the song, sung by staff and pupils of Knighton School 2000, are available on CD and MP3.

Description:

A slow elegant instrumental piece, perfectly suited to stately occasions or funerals. It is just over 2 minutes long and was orifginally written for a small ensemble to play at a family member's committal. We'd been struggling to find some music that would suit the occasion and would also be short enough without having to fade it out prematurely.
