Your initial visit is called the "Diagnostic Evaluation." The purpose of your first appointment is to gather background information about the present condition, review any past similar experiences, examine contributing medical factors, and assess whether there is a family history of psychiatric illness. Generally, but not always, a diagnosis is made at the first visit and a plan for treatment is started. Treatment might necessitate medication, psychotherapy, counseling, further diagnostic testing, referral to another specialist, or any combination of the above. If medication is indicated, I will provide continued follow-up at regular intervals.
The process of seeking psychiatric care can certainly be intimidating, but in taking the first step by making an appointment, you have already made a commitment to better health. Throughout the course of diagnosis and treatment, your input and involvement are critical. Do not hesitate to ask questions or seek clarification. The keystone of my medical practice style is to establish a collaborative relationship with my patients. I truly believe that this investment you’ve made in your mental health will pay its greatest dividends when we work together.
