Supply List for Band

Students must bring the following materials to every rehearsal.

1. Instrument and supplies necessary for daily playing (reeds, valve oil, etc.)

2. Pencil (no pens allowed in band)

3. All Band Music

Required Maintenance Accessories (some may come with the instrument)

Flute:

• Cleaning Rod

• Swab for cleaning rod (an old handkerchief is perfect)

Clarinet:

• Cleaning Swab

• 4 Reeds

• A Reed Guard to protect the reeds

• Cork Grease

Saxophone:

• Cleaning Swab

• 4 Reeds

• A Reed Guard to protect the reeds

• Cork Grease

Oboe/Bassoon:

• 3 Reeds

• Reed Case

• Swab

• Small Water Container

• Cork Grease

Trumpet:

• Valve Oil

• Mouthpiece Brush

• Slide Grease

• Cleaning Snake

French Horn:

• Rotary Valve Oil

• Mouthpiece Brush

• Slide Grease

Trombone:

• Trombone Slide Cream

• Small spray bottle (for water to moisten slide cream)

• Slide Grease

• Mouthpiece Brush

• Cleaning Snake

Baritone/Tuba:

• Valve Oil

• Slide Grease

• Mouthpiece Brush

• Cleaning Snake

Percussion:

• Your own Mallets and Sticks

• Bell Set

• Practice pad

• Stick/Mallet Bag

Recommended Equipment

Often, accessory equipment that comes with a student instrument does not allow for a mature tone quality. The following is a list of items that will drastically improve your sound and ease of playing. While this equipment is not required, it is highly recommended. Prices are available from Willamette Valley Music Company (503-385-8790) or Uptown Music (503-393-4437).

• Up-graded mouthpiece, either to an intermediate or professional model

• Up-graded Ligature for instruments with a reed to Intermediate (such as Luyben) or Professional Models (such as Rovner)

• Instrument up-grade--quality student instruments are made to last, but are not the highest quality in terms of play-ability or tone production. Upgrading to an intermediate or a professional model is recommended if you are able.

• Brass players: B.E.R.P.'s (Buzz Extension and Resistance Piece) are highly recommended.

• Percussion: Professional Sticks and Mallets (several pairs for different instruments)

Additional supplies that are highly recommended:

• Wire music Stand

• Metronome (you can find a free App on your smart device)

• Electronic Tuner (you can find a free App on your smart device)
