Dear Band Parents,

As we are delving into playing the entire instrument, there are several high-quality online videos that can assist your child with home practice that I wanted you to be aware of and encourage your child to watch when they are practicing at home. The first is the website attached to the band method book "Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician."  This is not a book that we use at Parrish, but the site if free for anyone to use:  www.habitsuniversal.com  In this website there are videos that show the student how to properly assemble, hold, play, and properly take care of each instrument. Simply click on the "Start Up Clinic" for your instrument.

For all instruments: There is an app called "Bandmate". It is awesome, because when you play a note it will show you the name of the note you are playing and it's location on the staff. This is especially helpful for brass players, because each valve combination or slide position has several different notes (called partials) that can be played. It is very difficult for a ​beginner to ​know which note they are playing, and this app shows you! It is a free app, and here is the website:

Please encourage your child to watch these videos at home and practice playing our first 5 notes. The goal is a long and steady tone to gain control, build embouchure muscles, and increase consistency.
