Dear Director,
You are invited to the 4th annual Capitol City Middle School Band Festival held at Parrish Middle School in Salem, Oregon. This is a non-competitive festival with the philosophy that we are coming together to enjoy sharing our music.
In addition to getting the opportunity to perform on a stage for judges and other groups, every band will receive judges’ rating and/or comments, a clinic from one of the judges, and a plaque with a Gold, Silver or Bronze award. This is a non-competitive festival, so awards will be given based solely on your performance and you will not be judged in comparison to other bands. Judges are instructed to be fair with their scores, but also to be generous when considering how early in the year this festival is. Furthermore, you get to decide which ability level you want your group to be judged at; Advanced or Intermediate. Advanced Bands will be judged using the OMEA/OBDA Scoring Rubric. Intermediate Bands will use the same rubric, but on an easier scale which is adjusted for less experienced bands.
We have a large auditorium that is very good for band performances. We have a great stage for smaller bands! The stage area will be crowded for bands larger than 60, but we can make it work. If you have a large band with 5 rows, plus percussion, you will need to adjust to a 4 row plus percussion configuration for this festival. Also, it will help for larger bands to limit their percussion needs (e.g., avoid programing pieces that require a marimba or piano; there just isn't room).
Parrish Middle School is located near the state capitol at 810 Capitol St. NE, Salem, OR 97301 (do not send registration materials to this address—instead, send it to the PO Box listed above). We are a 5 minute bus ride to the Salem Center Shopping Mall with different fast food choices for lunch. Also, we are close to other fast food options. If you are looking for a fun and/or educational activity for your group after the festival, Salem has options. For example, you could schedule a tour of the State Capitol or you take your kids to Get Air (trampoline park), the KROC Center (swimming, rock wall, media room...), or to one of our local bowling alleys.
A registration form is attached (see below). Feel free to forward this to your colleagues who might not have seen this information. Preferred performance times will be given to those who return their entries first. Your registration will not be considered complete until we receive your check! Please note that there is an early registration discount (see attached registration form).
Feel free to contact me with any questions. I hope to see you at the festival!
