The autumn rain arrives on cue across the Seattle hills,
A steady mist against the glass that softens, soothes, and chills.
The fallen leaves stick to the street beneath an amber glow,
While October winds begin to whisper what the seasons know.
This week I sat on either side of desks and open chairs,
First as a parent listening in to middle school affairs
Hearing how my sixth and eighth grade boys are finding ground,
Growing tall in mind and spirit, purposeful and sound.
Then turning round to welcome twenty families through the door,
Kindergarten through fifth grade, their footsteps on the floor.
Sharing sparks of wonder, curious hands, and growing pride,
The small triumphs of the classroom where imagination thrives inside.
Tomorrow brings the porchlight glow, the rustle of disguise,
Halloween tricks and candy bags beneath dark Northwest skies.
And soon the clocks will turn their hands to borrow back an hour,
A quiet gift of extra time as winter takes its power.
Beyond the bells and schedules, deeper blessings find their way
A half sister's warm milestone, celebrated on her day.
And best of all, a mother healing steadily and strong,
Rebuilding after surgery where patient prayers belong.
For breath within our lungs today, for family whole and near,
For health that holds us steady through the turning of the year
I watch the raindrops tap the pane and let the gratitude impart
A quiet, rich, abiding peace within a thankful heart.
