Pinewood Derby
The Pinewood Derby is an exciting event for Cub Scouts and their families, where they design and race miniature cars made from blocks of pine wood. These races are held by Cub Scout packs across the country, and it's a great opportunity for Scouts to learn about science, engineering, and teamwork.
Here is a quick overview.
To do well in the Pinewood Derby, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, focus on aerodynamics and weight distribution. A sleek car with a low center of gravity will be more likely to zip down the track quickly. Second, use the right wheels and axles. Lubricate the axles to reduce friction, and consider using lightweight wheels to minimize rotational inertia. Finally, test your car thoroughly and make adjustments as needed. The more you practice, the better your chances of winning!
Tip and Commons Problems
Try to get it as close to five ounces as you can, if you’re looking to go fast. The weight helps it go down the track faster. You can certainly be under five, but you can’t be over.
Make sure your wheels function and roll correctly. Many times the wheels are last on and can fall off easily. Make sure they are properly attached and roll well.
Put graphite lubricant on your wheels. This is a powder buy from a hardware store. Put it on the axel and your wheel.
You cannot put weights below the car. Anything that protrudes from the base will catch on the track and your car won't move.
