Meet Our Leadership Team

Our Leadership Team is made up of qualified, properly trained adults, approved by our chartered organization (Cool Spring Baptist Church). We are proud of and grateful for our parent volunteers who give of their time and talents to lead our Pack to success.

Allow us to introduce ourselves!

Pack Committee & Den Leadership

Youth Protection Training (YPT2)

Chuck Hurd, Charter Organization Representative
Chuck serves the Pack as our Charter Organization Representative. A Life Scout in his youth, he remains an Order of the Arrow Brotherhood Member. He has been involved with Pack 521 since 1999 when he moved to Mechanicsville from Tidewater, Virginia, serving as a den leader for each rank. Both of his sons, Jacob and Stephen, progressed through Pack 521 and ultimately each achieved the rank of Eagle with Troop 521. Chuck served as our Pack Committee Chairperson from 2000 to 2009. He and his wife, Laura, enjoy traveling and boating on Lake Anna. Chuck currently serves as the Committee Chairman for Troop 521 as well as the Battlefield District Finance Friends of Scouting Committee. He and his family are active members of Cool Spring Baptist Church.

Gregory Schmidt, Cubmaster and Webelos I Den Leader
Gregory added it up once; he has spent a year and four months of his life in a tent. He is an Eagle Scout from Troop 521, but he doesn't get his name read off the plaque anymore because they only go back as far as the birth of the scout being honored at that Court of Honor (*sigh*). Other bona fides include Maine National High Adventure Base and Florida Sea Base, but he didn't get to do the Philmont Cavalcade because they had a weight limit for the riders (*sigh*). He was on Buckskin staff for four years, Camp Brady Saunders Boating director for 2 summers, has ridden an elephant, and consumed 113 different flavors of cobbler. His current project focuses on raising his daughters to be good people, loving his whole family, and being adored by his dogs. Gregory is also likely to break down in tears of joy at every Scouting "first" for his daughters.  If you see him all misty-eyed, it is okay; he just needs a moment.  Gregory also serves as the Den Leader for our Webelos I Scouts.

Rebecca Martin, Pack Committee Chairperson
Rebecca is entering her fifth year of Leadership as she moves through the program with her son Aiden. Rebecca enjoys nature, science, and family time among many other art and craft hobbies. Rebecca studied Mechanical Engineering at IIT in Illinois achieving a BSME degree. She worked in the Nuclear industry as an operator and Emergency Preparedness planner for ~9 years.   She also serves as a Den Leader and Popcorn Kernel.

Bryan Rapp, Pack Treasurer
Bryan is entering his fifth year as a committee member for Pack 521.  He is in his second year as Treasurer of the Pack and just finished four years as Den Leader for his older son who has moved up to Scouting BSA. He is looking forward to helping his younger son as he moves through the Pack in the Bear Den this year.  He has a long history of scouting, having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth. Bryan grew up mainly in West Virginia.  He attended Virginia Tech for his Electrical Engineering degree and has been employed at Eaton-PDI for 22 years. He and his wife Gennifer have two children- Preston and Spencer. Bryan enjoys spending time coaching soccer and basketball for his children. He also enjoys camping, fixing and building things, and biking.

Joan Sturdevant, Advancement Chairperson
Advancement is at the core of Cub Scouting! Joan is an integral part of our program, having an in-depth understanding of advancement plans, assisting in recognition ceremonies, collecting advancement reports from leadership and through ScoutBook, purchasing and presenting our awards and advancement in an interesting and fun way every month.  Joan is a proud and seasoned Pack 521 mom!

Melissa Larimer, Tiger Den Leader
Melissa is also joining our Leadership Team for the first time as a Den Leader to Tiger Den 7. She is in her 18th year of teaching and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Melissa currently works as an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher at three schools in Hanover County. When she is not entertaining her two boys, Melissa enjoys reading and crafting. She is very excited to work with our Tigers this year!

Derek Larimer, Tiger Den Leader
Derek is joining our Leadership Team for the first time as a Den Leader to Tiger Den 7, where his son is a member. He was a Boy Scout growing up in southwest Virginia but has called Mechanicsville home for the past six years. Derek has two sons, Samuel and William. In his free time, Derek enjoys playing music; his favorites are old-time music on his fiddle or conjunto music on his accordion, but he also plays the guitar and banjo. He enjoys building and carving in his woodshop.

Tony Call, Webelos I Den Leader
Tony serves as our Den Leader for the Webelos I Scouts.

Rebekah Nyalko, Membership Coordinator
Rebekah is a seasoned Scouter with Pack 521, having spent over a decade in one position or another, from proud parent to den leader Cubmaster.  Her husband Mike served as assistant Den Leader and Treasurer with Pack 521 for many years.  Her sons, Michael (Eagle) and Nate, are both members of Troop 521.  When she isn't running, Geocaching, camping, or hiking, Rebekah maintains a Scouting blog at www.LookWiderStill.com and serves as the Digital Media Manager for the Heart of Virginia Council.  For her, it's all Scouting all the time!
