The Home Page Paintings

On this page are six copies of paintings of Pacifics by Howard Fogg which were used on Christmas cards published by Leanin Tree of Boulder Colorado.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Subsequent pages present a portfolio of over 500 photographs of Pacifics from my collection. About 85 railroads are included. Except for the next page, photographs are arranged alphabetically by railroad. In some cases I have used common names for the railroads rather than the corporate name, i.e. Burlington, Frisco, Jersey Central, Lackawanna, etc. The page that follows is titled personal because it presents photographs I made of Pacifics in regular service during the last years of steam.

NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN & HARTFORD I-4 CLASS PACFIC BUILT BY SCHENECTADY IN 1916

INTRODUCTION

The Pacific 4-6-2 type steam locomotive with its four wheel leading truck, six drivers and two wheel truck supporting a large, deep firebox was one of the most common passenger locomotives in the United States and Canada. A trailing axle had been used earlier but the first true Pacific, and the one that gave the type of locomotive its name, was built in 1902 for the Missouri Pacific. Although mainly a passenger type, several railroads used the Pacific for freight service. The Pacific was often replaced by 4-6-4s, 4-8-2s and 4-8-4s but the number of Pacifics built far exceeded the number of Hudsons, Mountains and Northerns. Pacifics were built as late as 1948 by the Reading and 1949 by the Canadian Pacific and many were operating until the very end of the steam age in North America. Almost all major railroads used Pacifics; Western Pacific, Cotton Belt and New York, Ontario & Western are notable exceptions.
