WEEK 1
Day 1:
Find a Cemetery (One that begins with the first letter of your last name)
(identify a British cemetery somewhere in the world.)
There are over 25,000 WWI British cemeteries and memorials around the world.
Search for First World War Cemeteries with 500 - 1000 casualties. There should be 285 of these.
Your job is to pick one that begins with the first letter of your last name, and answer the following questions.
What is the name of the cemetery (1 pts)?
What country is it in (5 pts)?
What locality is it in (5 pts)?
How many people are buried there? (5 pts)?
List five historical facts about it (10 pts).
Day 2:
American Battlefields Monument Commission Search for Iowans
(identify someone from Iowa who's last name starts with the same letter as your last name).
Once you have identified the person who's grave you want to visit, answer the following questions:
Who are they (1 pts)?
When did they die (4 pts)?
What unit did they serve with (5 pts)?
What Cemetery are they buried in (5 pts)?
What country is that cemetery in (5 pts)?
Day 3 and 4:
Part 1.
The five posters below represent different ways to consider the war. Some of them are designed to get you angry. Some are designed to make you sad. Answer the following questions based on these posters. We will do 2 together. You can do three with the person sitting next to you.
What images are on the poster (1 pt)?
What emotion is this poster supposed to make you feel (1 pt)?
What are you supposed to do with that emotion (1 pt)?
Part 2 - February 21, 2013.
Create a poster encouraging people to go to the cemeteries you have seen. If necessary, use the sites to get information about more burial sites. Your poster will be worth 25 pts.
Each poster needs
1. to be on a piece of poster board (5 pts).
2. to use at least 3 colors (5 pts).
3. to use both words and pictures to explain the importance of sacrifice and respect for the dead (10 pts).

Following the defeat of the French armies during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, the French military had to adapt to a new balance of power in Europe. The emergence of the German Empire on the other side of the Rhine, combined with the loss of Alsace and Lorraine, seriously weakened France's strategic position.
The French lost the Franco-Prussian War. They had to figure out how to beat the Germans!
