You have to write a 400 word paper on one of the following elections. It will be worth 60 points. This will be due February 19. Late work will receive a maximum of 42 points.
Here are the contested elections you may choose from:
1800 1824 1860 1888 1912 1948 1960 1968 1980 1992 2000 1796 2008 1936 1896
You must use five sites. One of them may be the Wikipedia, and one may be Britannica On-Line. You may also use Google News and Time.com for additional sites:
Britannica Online (31ottumwa, gpaea )
Google News (narrow search by date)
Time.com (also narrow search by date)
All pages used must be cited using easybib. Although you are encouraged to cite and use these resources, all writing must be in your own words. I will use the attached rubric to evaluate your papers.
After your paper is complete, you must submit it to TurnItIn.com for review and evaluation (course code 6091190, password is bulldogs25). The PAPER IS DUE FEBRUARY 19!
The grading rubric is attached below.
Notes from Paper 1
Only quote what you can't say yourself. - One paper is almost 50% quotes. Another uses a Wikipedia quote for a candidate, but could be more effective because that candidate was particularly quoteable. "Ask yourself, 'Are you better off now than you were four years ago? Is it easier for you to go and buy things in the stores than it was four years ago? Is there more or less unemployment in the country than there was four years ago? Is America as respected throughout the world as it was?”
Also, one candidate says of another that their relationship is "unhealthy." I like the quote - where is it from?
Keep your tenses in the past.
Cite Britannica Properly.
Command the language - ie - what is a "landslide," what is "less than spectacular," and what is an "overwhelming victory?"
Try an outline - especially with some of the more complicated elections and issues.
PAPER 2 - This will use the same sources, but will be on Third Parties.
Anti-Mason Party
Bull-Moose Party
Populist Party
Progressive Party (1948)
Dixiecrats
Free Soil Party
Green Party (2000)
Libertarian Party
Tea Party
Know-Nothing Party
American Independent Party (1968)
Other - You pick!
