A Roman Lime Kiln

By Jackson 1973

The lime kiln which is the subject of this report was found during a geophysical survey arranged for the location of further pottery kilns. It had been soundly constructed, having a circular stone-built chamber roughly 3 m in diameter and 2 m deep. The chamber had a ledge 45 cm wide running round the inside and a stone-built throat or elongated flue some 2 m in length on the south side, beyond which lay an oval pit or stoke-hole. During the lifetime of the kiln, the flue had been rebuilt and the levels of the floor and ledge of the chamber were raised. The kiln probably dates to about the middle of the second century and had presumably been associated with the villa which lies nearby to the north. Little apparently remains of this building other than pitched stone foundations, although tesserae in the plough soil confirm the former presence of mosaic flooring.

Dating Ancient Kilns,

A combined archaeomagnetic and thermoluminescence analysis

By Avdokia Tema 2014

roman lime kiln

We present here the results of a detailed archaeomagnetic and thermoluminescence investigation performed on bricks from two ancient kilns excavated at Kato Achaia, Greece. Magnetic mineralogy mea-surements have been carried out to determine the main magnetic carrier of the samples. The directions of the characteristic remanent magnetization of each structure have been obtained from standard thermaldemagnetisation procedures and the absolute archaeointensity has been determined with the Thellier modified by Coe method, accompanied by regular partial thermoremanent magnetization (pTRM) checks. The full geomagnetic field vector was used for the archaeomagnetic dating of the two kilns, after comparison with the reference secular variation curves calculated directly at the site of Kato Achaia. Independentdating has also been obtained from thermoluminescence (TL) analysis on four brick samples from each kiln. The dating results obtained from the two methods have been compared and the last firing of each kiln has been estimated from the combination of the two techniques. Using the independent date offeredby TL dating, the new archaeomagnetic data have been compared with other data from the same time period and they can further be used as reference points to enrich our knowledge about the past secularvariation of the Earth’s magnetic field in Greece.Subscription required

Archaeomagnetic study of a lime kiln

at Bazzano (northern Italy)

By Avdokia Tema 2008

An archaeomagnetic study was carried out as part of a rescue operation on a lime kiln discovered during the exploitation of a gravel quarry at Bazzano, near Bologna (northern Italy). Based on very poor archaeological information the kiln is dated around 3rd–4th century

AD but no other structures have been found in the area to support this age. A hierarchical sampling process has been followed; twelve independently oriented bricks were collected from the circular wall of the baking room from which 35 cylindrical specimens were cut

and measured. Demagnetization procedures reveal a single-component, stable remanent magnetization. The dispersion of the mean direction is low, even though some deviations in the remanence direction as a function of the position of the samples in the kiln wall are observed. The archaeomagnetic age of the kiln has been obtained using recent advances on data elaboration involving Bayesian statistics

and the preliminary secular variation (SV) curve of Italy. For comparison, the kiln has been also dated using the French SV curve. The ages obtained are in good agreement and suggest that the last firing of the kiln could have occurred as late as at the end of 6th century AD.
