The song enthralls me,
its powerful magic awakens me. - Erda, in Siegfried
Richard Wagner's monumental Ring of the Nibelung is the whole of San Francisco Opera's Summer Season. The dress rehearsal cycle of the four music dramas begins on June 6; public cycles begin on Tuesdays, June 12, 19, and 26 (see the calendar below). There is international interest in San Francisco Opera's Ring. Performances are expected to be standing-room-only (and volunteers may not be able to find seats). All performances will have OperaVision in the Balcony. For this Ring: With only four cycles, ushering opportunities are limited. Volunteering is completely optional. However, if you want to see or try at least one part of the Ring cycle, it would be nice to have your help at the Opera House during this special, busy time.
Please plan to stay for the whole performance of any music drama for which you are scheduled. Ushers are needed to stay 10 minutes after the final curtain to monitor for patron-safety and to say good-byes. [Remember that the shuttle to the Civic Center Station runs for about 45 minutes after the end of performances.]
You may volunteer for rehearsals without doing any public performances; this Summer season, rehearsals are considered equivalent to performances.
Approximate running times for the four parts of the Ring are Das Rheingold - 2 hours 35 minutes, with no intermission Die Walküre - 4 hours 30 minutes, including 2 intermissions Siegfried - 4 hours 50 minutes, including 2 intermissions Götterdämmerung - 5 hours 10 minutes, including 2 intermissions (Act 1 is just over 2 hours by itself)Ushers are now welcome to volunteer for any open slots.
On March 12, invitations to schedule were sent out. Scheduling start-dates were between March 16 and 25.
Starting March 25, the earlier limit of volunteering for only ONE of each music drama in the Ring was no longer in force.
Please check the status of your Ring schedule through PRESTO.
Any questions? E-mail <ushers@sfopera.com>. Or write them down the next time you are volunteering at the Opera House and give the paper to the usher to whom you report, or leave it at that Welcome Desk in the main lobby.
