Open Source Hardware (OSHW) is hardware whose design is made publicly available so that anyone can study, modify, distribute, make, and sell the design or hardware based on that design.

Ideally, open source hardware uses readily-available components and materials, standard processes, open infrastructure, unrestricted content, and open-source design tools to maximize the ability of individuals to make and use hardware.

Open source hardware gives people the freedom to control their technology while sharing knowledge and encouraging commerce through the open exchange of designs.

The following are links to key public and private sector organizations fostering the growth of the Open Source Hardware and/or 'Maker' movements:

3D Printing

Numerous individuals, open source hardware groups, do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts, academic institutions, and companies are working on the development of 3D printers suitable for affordable desktop use in homes and small businesses. Examples of some notable 3D projects and solutions include:

  • RepRap Project - One of the longest running projects in the desktop 3D printer category, The RepRap project aims to produce an 'open source' software driven 3D desktop printer.

  • Fab@Home – An open source project developing printers that make use of anything squirtable through a nozzle, from chocolate to silicon sealant and chemical reactants.

Other 3D printing companies to check out include: 3DSystems, MakerBot, Stratasys, Ultimaker...
