The PhD Summer Institute in International Trade & Industrial Organisation is an annual PhD Workshop, which I have co-founded and been co-organising together with Ilke Onur from Flinders University. The first and the third meetings were hosted by Flinders University in March 2023 and 2025, in Adelaide, AUS. The second (2024) meeting was hosted by the University of Canterbury, in March 2024, in Christchurch, NZ.
The next meeting (PhDSI4) will be hosted by the Deakin Business School at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, on 19th March 2026. The submission instructions and the deadline along with other details can be found here.
The objective of the PhD Summer Institute is to provide PhD students of all years in the two fields, international trade (JEL-Classification F0 to F2) and industrial organisation (JEL-Classification L0 to L5), with a platform for discussing their work with both fellow PhD students and senior scholars. Each student paper is assigned a Senior discussant. Both theoretical and empirical research in international trade and/or industrial organisation is welcome.
Each year, the PhD Summer Institute is organised such that it is succeeded by the Australasian Trade Workshop, a highly respected trade-oriented conference, which I co-organise together with Frank Staehler from the University of Tuebingen, and Benedikt Heid from the University of Adelaide. PhD students accepted for presentation at the PhD Summer Institute are given the opportunity to also attend the Australasian Trade Workshop.
