"We used to joke that being in the Army was not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that!"
Alan Caldwell, Lt. Col., MPC, United States Army.
Whenever the United States Army is entrusted by the United States Government with the responsibility for the accounting of, disposition, storage, transfer, etc. of large sums of American or foreign currency, coins, gold bullion, script, or anything else of value or wealth -- then soldiers of the FINANCE CORPS must usually be part of the mission.
In the 1980's during the administrations of President Reagan and Bush some members of the U.S. Armed Forces possessing certain KSA's plus the required security clearances and while serving already in the Asia-Pacific theater of operations were afforded the unique opportunity to EARN (boots on the ground in Southeast Asia and/or in Korea) and be AWARDED their own "POW * MIA -- YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN" T-shirt (Made in USA) -- even though they themselves were not POWs or MIAs from the Vietnam War.
To the best of my knowledge NO living POWs / MIAs were ever recovered because of these efforts and former President Nixon (plus Ford and Carter) were kept informed as to the happenings.
One of my old Army units -- 230th FINANCE -- was very much involved with the wealth that was found with Saddam Hussein when the former leader of Iraq was captured by the 4th Infantry Division in 2003 and also the old and new post-Saddam Hussein Iraqi currency. 230th Finance usually deployed overseas with the 4th Infantry Division.
