Volunteers are an important part of the OBX MMSN. Volunteers help by investigating reports of stranded marine mammals and communicating the species, size, condition, and specific location to help biologists prepare for their response. Volunteers are often the first on scene at live strandings and are important in getting the animal as comfortable as possible while on the beach. Volunteers also help assess and monitor hauled-out seals that regularly visit during the winter.
