Make a difference! By giving to this program, you help us continue educating the public & protecting seals, manatees, whales, dolphins, and porpoises of the Outer Banks.
Private donations can be made directly through our non-profit society to support our network and conservation mission.
Your contribution matters!
Every year, we monitor an average 10 manatees, 50 seals with 1-5 interventions, and respond to 70 strandings, all stretching along 170 miles of coastline.
OBX MMSN Supplies: We're just 2 months away from our peak season, so we're stocking up on supplies! There are some things we just can't live without, such as nitrile gloves, knives, sample containers, formalin, Ziplock bags, and scalpel blades. Our goal is to reach $5,000.
OBX MMSN Diagnostics: One of the most frequent questions we are asked is, "Why did that animal die?" Sometimes we are given clues from necropsy, but most of the time, to answer or confirm our suspicions based on necropsy findings, we have to send off samples for diagnostics such as histopathology, biotoxin analysis, PCR for virus detection, and cultures. And yes, that costs money, including packaging, shipping, and running the test results. Just like a human going to the doctor's office and having tests run. Our goal is to reach $5,000.
OBX MMSN Walk-In Freezer & Cooler Unit: One of our most essential tools in our "tool box" is being able to cool carcasses before necropsy or freeze samples. Sometimes our samples are EXTRA LARGE! Our current freezer/cooler unit is 17 years old and has endured numerous hurricanes and a lifetime of exposure to salt air. Unfortunately, that has taken its toll. We have had it resurrected and brought back to life several times, along with numerous other repairs and replacement parts. Over the next few years, we plan to replace it with a new unit. Our goal is to reach $50,000.
