Not every state requires it but most do. In most cases you can not drive a car without car insurance. Now every state is different, but in New York, car insurance consists of the following mandatory sub-insurances:

    • Liability coverage for bodily injury and or property damage you may have caused in an accident.

    • Personal injury protection to pay for hospital and work loss related expenses for anyone injured in or on your vehicle, regardless of fault or accident.

    • Uninsured / under-insured motorist coverage to compensate for economic loss not covered by another parties insurance due to limits too low or non-existent.

Optional coverages such as medical payments, collision coverage and comprehensive coverage are also available to help offset economic loss you may incur as the result of an accident.

In New York you must also maintain a minimum of $25,000 per person with a $50,000 per accident liability limit, but it is always wise to carry more if you can afford it.

Please read the 2009 guide to automobile insurance on the NY Insurance Department site for more information on required coverage.
