Atlantis: A Game of Sea Level Rise

Atlantis game board applied to the City of Dunedin, Florida, USA.

Game Rules:

  • Blue, red, and white pieces represent government, residents, and businesses, respectively. Some lands are shared by multiple stakeholders.

  • The objective of the players is to protect their lands from destructive damage from nature and not to bankrupt at the end of the game. Players start with a certain amount of money and earn additional money at the beginning of each round according to the number of lands they own.

  • Wooden cubes represent the level (1,2,3) of infrastructure development against SLR in that land. Larger numbers on the cubes indicate better protection, but also cost more.

  • Players, representing the three stakeholders and nature, take turns to decide on SLR adaptation actions. Players who share a land can cooperate on infrastructure development actions by negotiating and sharing the cost.

  • At the end of each round, nature rolls the dice and selects the lands (hexagons) where the damage occurs according to the numbers on the dice.
